How Fast Does Melanoma Grow ?

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. It may occur in just about anybody; more so in those who have the risk factors for the disease. The occurrence of melanomas has been found to be linked with the presence of moles. Generally, people who have large and many moles are found to be more susceptible to the disease.

Melanoma can, nevertheless, also occur in those without moles and freckles and also in elderly men. Nevertheless, the growth of melanomas can differ from person to person. Research has found that generally, melanomas which are thick, symmetrical, elevated and have regular borders or produce symptoms are the ones which grow faster. Although this is not very common. The melanomas are generally red rather thane being brown, black symmetrical and symptomatic. In fact, they are so dangerous that rapidly growing melanomas can be fatal and life threatening in weeks.

Research has found that at an average, melanomas grow between 0.1 and 0.5 millimeters per month. Tumor thickness, the formation of ulcers on the skin, lack of pigment in the tumor called amelanosis, regular borders and elevations are found to be responsible for rapid tumor growth. Fast growing melanomas are also found to occur in people who have crossed the age of 70 and in those with few moles and freckles.

The factors that do not have any role to play in the rapid growth of the melanomas are age spots or liver spots, a history of sunburns, the types ok skin, the color of the eye, family history of melanoma growth and current or childhood exposure to the sun.
