AIDS And Symptoms

AIDS stands for Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome. It is caused by the HIV virus, or the Human Immuno Deficiency Virus, that acts to destroy the human body’s immune system by killing its cells. When the immune system’s cell count falls drastically to a very critical level, it leads to AIDS, which is life threatening.

The HIV virus is deadly and usually leads to death after AIDS. It has a 100 percent mortality rate, and scientists all over the world are trying to find antidote for the virus, and a cure for AIDS. Now, there approximately 40 million HIV infected people all over the world, with 1 million from the US alone.

HIV/AIDS is such a kind of disease that does not have any specific symptoms or any particular time limit allotted for the development of symptoms. While some people develop minor symptoms like fever, tiredness, enlargement of the lymph nodes, and headache within weeks, it takes years in some people to show any sign of HIV.

But, it should not be mistaken that the virus remains dormant. Even when a person feels normal, the virus would be actively multiplying and killing the immune cells, slowly reducing the immunity of the person, thereby leaving him vulnerable to various infections or diseases, and finally resulting in AIDS.

There are many other symptoms like dry cough, memory loss, and neurological disorders. Excessive and rapid loss of weight is excessively common in HIV infected people.

Since the virus kills the primary infection fighters called the CD4 T cells, the other diseases or infections that are diagnosed are called as "opportunistic infections", which may include pneumonia, a brain infection called toxoplasmosis, MAC (mycobacterium avium complex) and Kaposi's sarcoma, and cancer of the tissues.

HIV/AIDS is usually a non-symptomatic disease that is extremely contagious.
