What Is Coronary Heart Attack And What Causes It ?

A coronary heart attack is also known as myocardial infarction. It occurs when there is reduced supply of oxygen and nutrients to the myocardium or the wall or muscle of the heart through the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries are not able to supply the oxygen and nutrients when they are blocked; most often die due to plaque formation.

The plaque may become so thick and dense that it may tear or rupture leading to thrombosis or the formation of a blood clot. This condition of plaque formation is known as atherosclerosis, and the resulting disease is known as coronary artery disease or CAD.

A heart attack is also called coronary thrombosis because of the formation of a blood clot in the affected arteries. There may be many reasons for a heart attack to occur such as, if there is a family history of atherosclerosis, if the person has high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, a history of diabetes or obesity in the family, having a stressful lifestyle and, of course, the lack of exercise. Such persons are prone to having a heart attack more than others.

The symptoms for a coronary heart attack manifest in different ways in different people. In some, the symptoms may show right in the early stages itself such as angina. In others, the person may not experience anything at all till the plaque ruptures and a blood clot is formed. Other than angina, which is chest pain, there may be pain in the shoulders, left arm, jaw and even the abdomen. There may be feeling of dizziness, nausea and shortness of breath as a well.

Blood-Clot-From-Coronary-Angiogram      Blood clots are generally formed to stop bleeding, as in the case of an injury. When a blood vessel is injured, then the blood cells and the fibrin strand rapidly form a clump to stop the bleeding. This is a natural process in case of an injury. But, when the blood clot forms even when the person is not injured, then it is a pathological condition which needs to be checked. This is because such kind of blood clots may not allow the flow of blood through an artery or a vein. More..
