Raising chickens need a little groundwork to be done before starting the process. You need to find out whether your city laws permit you to raise these birds in the first place. Assess whether your lifestyle would suit this as chickens require good amount of time and attention in terms of food requirements as well as maintaining the coop especially when they are small.
Then, estimate how many chickens you are going to grow at a time and allocate the space accordingly. For a flock of six chickens, you need a yard measuring 6 ft X 10 ft. the coop size should be minimum 4 ft X 6 ft.
You also need to decide whether you want to grow egg-laying or meat chickens. Buy healthy chickens from a reputed store and ensure that you purchase hens and not roosters! Get them vaccinated as per standard recommendations.
Chickens are much more cost efficient when compared to other domesticated pets. Chickens are very small and fragile during their first four weeks after birth. During this period, you need to maintain a clean coop which is warm enough (about 90 degrees Fahrenheit). Ensure that the chicks consume adequate food and water. Include healthy grains with lot of protein content.
Pat them when they are young so that they become friendly to you. Till they are 8 – 10 weeks old, you can feed the chicks using the chicken feeder. Commercial medicated chicken feed is also available in many stores which protect them from various fatal diseases.
