Care For A Cockatoo

Cockatoo is a good option for bird lovers who want to keep a pet at home. They are social, cute, charming and adorable and can prove to be best friends to man. Their feathers are usually of one color but they are notable for their crests. They require extreme care and demand lot of attention.

The birds have silky smooth texture but they also produce a powdery substance called dander which indicates healthy and normal growth. Hence, this bird may not suit people who are prone to allergies.

Cockatoo diet primarily consists of fresh vegetables and fruits, pellets for parrots, seed mix packages for hook bill, etc. Most cockatoos love fresh fruits, however their preferences may vary. In addition, you can also feed baked rice, fresh corn and sweet potatoes that are cooked. Avocado is toxic for these birds and hence you need to avoid this in your diet. Ensure that you supply fresh drinking water to cockatoo everyday.

Cockatoo is quite easy to maintain compared to other pets. The birds preen themselves time to time and hence they are extremely clean. So, you need not wash or bathe them everyday. However, some owners prefer to bathe the birds regularly. In that case, avoid bathing them in cold water as they are prone to infection. In their natural habitat, some cockatoos love to get wet when it is raining, while the others look for a cover.

Provide bird perches in the cage. However, avoid plastic perches as they tend to chew them and hence, it is harmful for them.
