Miniature Schnauzers are dogs which have a dense inner coat and a brittle and wiry outer coat which can be pure black, black with silver or white and black in color. The outer coat is wiry since it is stripped by hand which incidentally is a pre-requisite for its participation in dog shows.
Stripping by hand will help in maintaining a balance in shedding and assisting the growth of new coat. This is done by the fingers or by using a special knife. Stripping can be done only when the hair grows lengthy enough to be plucked. This will permit the original coat to be visible and maintain the correct texture of the outer and inner coats. Clipping will rob the coat of its original color.
Grooming is not just for brushing or stripping. It helps the owner bond better with the pet. Before a bath, the hair will have brushed with a pin-brush to remove knots or snarls followed by combing with a line-brush for smoothening snarls if any.
Then, the dog can be shampooed avoiding the eyes and mouth. The shampoo will have to be rinsed out thoroughly to avoid formation of flakes if it remains on the coat. This should be followed by squeezing out excess water and drying the coat. Thereafter, you can either strip the coat with your hands, or using a pair of clippers.
Clipping nails is another part of grooming. One should be cautious not to clip the nails too short lest it starts bleeding. The outer ears can be cleaned and the glands can be expressed by the owner or by vets as suitable.
