The Shih Tzu is a small sized dog which has two coats, the outer and the inner coat which is not shed. The outer coat is soft and silky while the inner coat cottony. The hair requires grooming everyday since the outer hair has the tendency of getting tangled with the inner coat.
Generally the coat is given an even puppy cut for easy maintenance. But many owners prefer to keep the coat uncut but styled in many ways. Some of them are:
- Traditional cut: Here the coat is trimmed in many layers or in one level all over, while the hair on the head is left uncut and tied in a top knot.
- Puppy cut: Here the coat is trimmed to a medium length. The hair is cut to maintain a 2 inch long coat on the body, legs and neck. The hair on the head is tied in to a pony-tail. Sometimes the coat on the sides is layered to give a fluffier appearance. The hair near the nose and eyelashes is maintained short while the beard is cut to maintain the level above the ears or left uncut.
- Short cut: Here the cut of keeping the coat 2 inches in length is maintained all over for a fluffier appearance.
- Shaved cut: This is chosen by owners who do not have enough time for grooming the coat or if the coat has got matted severely. The puppy gets a different look wherein its features get highlighted and the hair will grow back to the original length in due course of time.
