Type Of Freshwater Fish

Different freshwater fish have different needs and vary as per their swimming levels. The variations are also seen in their temperaments and need of lighting. Let us study some varieties of fresh water fish.

Types of Freshwater Fish:

  • Chinese Algae Eaters - These fish like to feed on algae and, thus, if you are planning on keeping them in your aquarium, they will surely keep it clean and free from algae. These fish also like to hide in places such as wood, rocks and plants. These fish would need a bit of sunlight, since there primary feed is algae. Occasionally, they also like to eat a little spinach and lettuce.
  • Salmon - These are the types which are very particular about their territory. They would not like to see other type of fish entering in their territory. These are often referred to as anadromous fish. This means that they are fish that live in the sea, but come to reproduce in fresh water, like rivers, streams or even lakes.
  • Black Ruby Barb - These are seen in streams flowing down hills that are almost 300 m from the sea level. They have an aggressive nature and like to have plants and rocks in their water.
  • Sea Trouts - The name sea trout has been given to them because they pass some part of their lives in the sea, mainly the females. They have a mouth shaped like a torpedo. The trouts generally live in rivers.
  • Goldfish - These are the beautiful ornamental kind of fish. It is believed that these were the first variety of freshwater fish that was kept by people. Cool streams, lakes and ponds are their favorite spots.
  • Swordtail - These are known for their peaceful nature. But sometimes, they may show aggressiveness to other males. These are quite popular as pets and people love to keep them in freshwater aquariums. These fish like to feed on both prepared food as well as live food.
