Different Carp Species

The varieties of fresh water fish belonging to the Cyperinidae family are commonly known as carp fish. There are different species of carp fish. The most common carp fish are the European carp. These are home grown in Asia and Europe, but nowadays, these are widespread in all over the world.

The common carp grows up to a maximum length of five feet which means 1.5 meters. The maximum weight that these fish can gain is about 80lbs means 37.3 kg. The common carp’s average length is about one to two feet and weighs 10 pounds. The wild common carps are of smaller size with lesser weight. Common carps are not only found in rivers, but also in lake waters. The river varieties are much stronger than the lake varieties.

Another variety of carp fish is the mirror carp. These fish possess large row of scales resembling mirror which runs all along the body. Mirror carp can grow max to a length of five feet and possess a max weight of 60lbs. The average length of mirror carp variety is about 1-2 feet and weighs around 10lbs.

The leather carp variety grows to a max length of four feet and gains a max weight of more than 50lb. The average length size of a leather carp is about 1-2 feet and average weight is approximately 10lbs. Leather carp can eat almost anything. Its favorite baits are bollies, bread and luncheon meat.

A smaller kind of carp is the crucian carp. It is generally found in lakes, ponds and also in slow moving river waters. Asia and Europe are its native places. These leather carp resemble the common carp when it comes to color and pattern of the scales.
