African Cichlids are believed to be one of the most colorful freshwater fish and, therefore, they are one of the most loved fishes for the aquarium. If the pH level of the water and the mineral requirements are properly fulfilled, these fish are one of the hardiest ones to breed.
These fish are mostly seen in the lakes in Eastern Africa. These lakes are popular for their unique characteristics, and, hence, it is not easy to keep these fish in the aquarium, not at least for novices.
These fish are used to surviving in rocky topography and alkaline water. They are very aggressive in nature due to which novices find it difficult to handle them.
African Cichlids mostly arrive from 3 big lakes situated in Eastern Africa, namely Tanganyika, Victoria and Malawi. The environment of these lakes is usually rocky and alkaline. Therefore, it is very important to maintain the same environment for them when they are being transferred to an aquarium. While looking for fish tanks, ensure that the tank is large enough to hold sufficient water. A 55-gallon water tank capacity would be an ideal one for keeping African Cichlids. You have to put a lot of rocks inside the aquarium. You may also consider adding some live plants. Remember that the plants that you put inside the aquarium should be able to withstand the high levels of pH.African Cichlids are fond of digging. Therefore, make sure that the substrate deep enough to facilitate this. A depth of two to three inches should suffice.
