If you see the goldfish, they would all look similar. It is very difficult to identify the sex of a goldfish. When you are putting them in your aquarium, you need to have both the male and the female ones. The sex of a goldfish can only be identified once they attain enough sexual maturity. About a year old goldfish would be suitable for this.
The male goldfish has a middle line ridge which runs all along the back of the pelvic fins to their vent which opens on the underside. In females, this is either absent or if it is present, it is very small. The abdomen area a place between pelvic and the anal fins is soft in females, whereas in males it is quite firm. The shape of the vent is also one identifying factor for the males and females. The females have circular and convex vents, while males have thinner and concave vents.
You can also differentiate between a male and female by checking out their colors. Female goldfish come in brighter colors and are more active than their male counterparts. Although this is a difficult method to detect, one can always try their luck.
Another time tested way is to leave one female fish in the tank. Seeing a new female entrant the males are most likely to react, whereas the females will show utter lack of interest. For all the methods given above the most important thing is to observe them closely and monitoring their activities very minutely only then you will be able to differentiate between a male and a female variety.
