How To Care For Goldfish In A Pond ?

Goldfish are rather easy to keep when compared to Koi. These fish do not have too much demand and look good too. If they are being the right kind of pond, they thrive quite well with least number of complaints. There are various factors which determine an ideal pond condition.

The first thing to ensure is the water temperature. Goldfish are capable of withstanding a huge temperature variation from nearing to freezing to up to about thirty degrees Celsius. But, yes they live comfortably in warm water where the temperature is about twenty degree Celsius. In this temperature, they are known to breed well. Therefore, make sure that the temperature of the pond water is somewhat close to twenty degree Celsius.

The next important consideration is the amount of oxygen that is dissolved in the water. Goldfish can tolerate very little amount of dissolved oxygen as compared to the Koi variety. This is the reason why goldfish are so hardy and can tolerate extreme conditions. But, it does not mean that they will not gasp for oxygen when it is too low. Sometimes, they do come to the surface in search of more oxygen. You can spray the pond occasionally with oxygen to make up for the lack of dissolved oxygen.

It is essential to have a pond filter in a fish pond. A pond filter helps in purifying the pond water. Pond water usually gets contaminated with fish excreta on a routine basis. If these bio wastes are not cleaned, they get accumulated in the pond causing the fish to die.
