The life expectancy of a goldfish is quite uncertain. It all depends on how well the goldfish has been cared for. The oldest goldfish is known to have lived for almost 43 years. This is, however, not an indication that all goldfish can live for so long. Goldfish on an average can live for 20 to 25 years. This happens if they are saved from predators, are properly cared for, and are offered the best feed.
In order to achieve this lifespan for your goldfish, you should provide the goldfish with natural environment. The fish tank should be large enough because one fish occupies a space of almost forty liters of water. If given a large space, they will be able to move freely once they find any threat. If the surface area of the tank is big, it provides sufficient oxygen. You must set up the tank first and then buy the goldfish. You can decorate the fish tank with gravel, plants and bridges. When the goldfishes are kept in such circumstances, they might even live up to forty years. But those who are exposed to natural habitat may just mange to live for twenty years only because of the harsh climate.
When goldfishes are kept in a fish tank they require an external filter to remove the wastes because goldfishes are known for their messy nature. On top of it, make sure that you clean the fish tank by yourself after each month. This will help the fish tank to be away from the dirt and bio waste.
