What Do Bass Eat ?

Bass is a popular fish especially with the seasoned anglers. Catching bass is also considered a sport in the United States. Several tournaments are organized in favor of bass hunting. Thus, most of the manuals and guides related to the topics of aquatic life and fishing mentions this species and their habits.

The habit of bass that is going to be dealt in this article is their food habit. Young bass like to eat zooplanktons, microscopic crustaceans and larvae of insects. However, after growing to a couple of inches, they convert into predators. Bass are essentially very aggressive fish and hunts and devours anything that can go inside their mouth. A full grown predator bass eats everything from worms, leeches, minnows and grubs to snakes, salamanders, bait fish and frogs. Bait fish like blue fish and Chad are some of the favorite meals of bass.

However, it is not sufficient to just put one of these foods as a bait to catch bass. Some fishing techniques are also involved in proper catching and handling of these fish as they are very good fighters too. Moreover, they have a very sharp sense of taste so much so that they can taste their food even before taking them in their mouth. Thus, if the scent of the angler gets mixed with the bait, the bass will immediately notice the difference in taste and release itself from the trap even before the angler manages to set the hook. Because of their food habits, the number of other small fish and insects living in the locality of a bass becomes sparse in a short term.
