Different Kinds Of Sharks

Sharks are one among the most amazing and most vicious creatures in the sea world. They came into existence nearly 450 million years back, much before the land vertebrates appeared on planet earth. There is a large variety of sharks that exist across different oceans around the globe. These different types of sharks have been categorized into genus, species, and families, based on the common characteristics and habits that they share.

Few common types of shark found are listed below:

  • Basking shark is known to be the 2nd largest fish in the world, with a weight of 4 tons. It has a length of up to 10 m and is usually known as one of the most frequently migrating species. They can swim with open mouths and are planktonic feeders. Basking sharks are very slow swimmers.
  • Tiger sharks are recognized to spend most of their days at a shallow depth of 150 m and at distance close to the reef edge. They swim at remarkably high speeds and are very aggressive in nature. They are, therefore, extremely dangerous and pose a great threat to human swimmers. Dark strips are present prominently on their back, setting them apart from other shark species, and hence they have been named as Tiger sharks.
  • Blue Shark is primarily found in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. Due to dark blue color on its top, it is named Blue shark. The main foods for blue shark are various kinds of squids and fish. The length of blue shark is 3.8m in length.
  • White shark lives in the continental shelf of the water and also in oceanic islands. The shape of shark is similar to torpedo and it is nearly 6.6m in length.
  • Hammerhead shark can be found in the lukewarm temperate waters. They are easily identified because of its distinct shape of head. The head comprises of a flattened and broad skull. Hammerhead sharks are supposed to be growing up to 4m in length.
