What Do Water Snails Eat ?
Water snails eat sea weeds and plants for survival. They mainly feed on aquatic plants, like elodea and anarchis. If you have snails in a fish tank, algae does not develop unless you expose the tank to direct sunlight. However, the fish tank should not be directly exposed to sunlight where it can heat up. Algae have to develop under normal circumstances.
Water snails are pretty easy to keep as pets, as they will survive even under rough conditions. Use moderate amount of aquarium salt for the snails. Snails eat anything and everything in the plant family. Even fish food can keep them happy. They like to feed on the decaying material when the algae form.
There are several varieties of snails that inhabit fresh water too. However, you have to make a careful choice while buying snail for an outdoor pond. There is only one variety, which is the Japanese trapdoor snail, which lives in the pond and will not feed on your plants. It only survives in algae. But these are great creatures as they help to clean the bottom of the pond where the algae usually forms.
The ramshorn snails will live in a fish tank and ponds. They usually stick to water plants or the corners of the pond. It feeds on the detritus and algae that settle at the bottom of the tank or a pond. The only thing about them is that they will make holes on the leaves of the plants. A black Japanese trapdoor snail is ideal for both ponds and fish tanks.
Apple snail is also a popular aquarium snail. However, this snail must not be housed in outdoor ponds, as it tends to proliferate in warm climates. It is also called the mystery snail. The snails mainly feed on water plants. Surprisingly these snails are even partial to carrots and apples. You need to put the fruits in the tank two days before they start eating it. This helps to soften the food.
If you are worried about the snails multiplying, then feed them less food. There should be specific feeding days for the crab and feed them based on what you think is right. However, ensure that put the food into the tank a couple of days before the feeding day. Snails tend to multiply very fast and you should keep watching their food if you want to prevent that. Planned feeding will also help you to determine the number of snails you want in your fish tank.
