What Is The Longest Insect ?

Insects are one of the most varied creatures on earth. Some may be as small as a few millimeters long while others can be a foot long! There are numerous types of insects found all over the world.

The longest insect has been discovered in Borneo, South East Asia. The dense vegetation and numerous trees in Borneo islands have hosted innumerable animals, birds and plants. The insect has been recorded to be the length of an adult’s arm! Interestingly, a local villager in the island discovered this unusual insect. It was handed over to a Malaysian naturalist Datuk Chan Chew Lun way back in 1989. It has been named after him and is called “Chan’s megastick”. It falls under the stick bugs category. These insects are also called phasmids in the animal kingdom. They are famous for camouflaging themselves in the best possible manner. They hang like lifeless sticks on trees making them look like branches and twigs or leaves. They sway back and forth when there is a breeze or strong wind, fooling predators.

The insect looks more or less like a long bamboo stick. It is dull green in color. Its legs are almost inconspicuous and appear as delicate twigs. It is total length has been recorded to be a whopping 56.7 cm, quite long for an insect! Its body length is also recorded to be the longest. The tip of its head to the abdomen measures 35.7 cm.

These insects mainly eat leaves and foliage. They also eat oak leaves when bred in captivity. With widespread deforestation and destruction of natural habitation, these insects are facing a survival crisis.
