Life Cycle Of A Turtle

The origin of turtles can be traced back to the Triassic Period that was prevalent around 240 to 250 million years ago. These organisms have shelled bodies and have the ability to survive on both, land and water. As result, one can observe these reptiles in oceans, rivers, forests, grasslands or even deserts.

Sea turtles vary in their food habits. While some consume only flesh, there are other varieties that are omnivorous. As in the case of most mammals, a baby turtle is conceived by means of copulation. However, the female species of this organism has a rare characteristic ability of mating with many males and accumulating the sperms for future fertilizations. While the mating occurs in the water, the female turtles lay about 1 to 200 eggs on land. Thereafter, the mother buries these eggs and abandons them forever without offering protection from predators such as raccoons and foxes.

The young ones hatch out of their sturdy egg shells after an incubatory period of about 2 to 3 months. Another unique feature of this reptile is that the gender of the young one is directly influenced by the surrounding temperatures. The higher the temperature, the more is the probability of the birth of a female turtle. Soon after birth, the hatchlings shift to the water bodies for survival. The rate of growth in these reptiles is relatively faster in the initial years of life. Gradually, the growth pattern slows down, taking about 5 to 20 years to attain maturity. The sea turtles tend to take a longer time to reach the threshold of reproduction in comparison to the land turtles. While the former reproduces between the age groups of 20 and 50 years, the latter can produce young ones between 15 to 20 years of age. The average lifespan of a turtle ranges between 30 to 60 years with variations according to the specific species. However, there have been reports of some turtles even crossing the 100 year milestone.
