Yogi Berra Biography

Lawrence Peter Berra, better known as "Yogi" Berra is a former Major League baseball player and manager. Berra was nicknamed “Yogi” by a friend who said he reminded him of a Hindu holy man (a yogi), while sitting with arms and legs crossed while awaiting his turn to bat or after losing a match.

He was named Most Valuable Player in the American Baseball League thrice (in the years 1951, 1954 and 1955) and as manager led American and National League teams to the World Series, being only one of the 6 managers to do so. Berra took part in 14 World Series and won ten championships. Both stand as records even today. Berra was an excellent baseball batter, and outstanding at hitting pitches, even bad pitches outside the strike zone. He could hit high and low pitches for home runs and line drives and 5 times had more homeruns than strikeouts in a season.

Berra was an exceptionally good fielder, leading all American League catchers 8 times in games caught, chances accepted and putouts, 6 times in double plays (which stands as a Major League record), thrice in assists and once in fielding percentages. He was extremely quick and mobile and later in his career played as a defensive outfielder in the Yankee’s left field. "Yogi" Berra was nominated for the Baseball Hall of Fame in the year 1972. Berra is also famous for his quotes including “It ain't over till it's over” and “I really didn't say everything I said. Then again, I might have said 'em, but you never know.”
