Who Is Oscar Wilde ?  

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde, more popularly known as Oscar Wilde, was born on 16 October 1854. He died on November 30, 1900. He was Ireland's most prominent author, story writer, poet and aesthete. Oscar had several interests, and wrote about many things.

He had great public speaking skills and entertained anyone who spoke with him. Some of his greatest and most acclaimed works are The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Importance of Being Earnest. Oscar could also converse in French and German with equal fluency. After completing his university, Wilde spent a lot of time taking up different kinds of literary pursuits. He even traveled to America teaching and lecturing various types of writing and the importance of literature.

When he came back to London, Oscar took up a job as a journalist and worked for 4 years. He became extremely popular in London. He was known for his flamboyant dressing and conversational skills. He very soon became popular, and several of his quotes were published in the newspapers regularly. At the peak of his success, he was sent to jail for two years for homosexuality. Oscar had liaison with men while being married and having children. Wilde also went to the extent of suing his lover’s father for libel, but the case was later dropped. He was convicted for gross indecency and hard labor.

While he was incarcerated, Oscar wrote De Profundis. After being released from prison, he was banished from both England and Ireland. He settled down in France, where he resumed his acquaintance with his old friends and social circle.
