M. K. Gandhi or Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi was one of the greatest national leaders of India. He brought about immense change during the times of strife without using a weapon or war. He practiced non violence and attained freedom through peace. He is known as the Father of the Nation in India and commends great respect from its citizens.

Here are some of the facts about Gandhi, the greatest leader in the world:

  • Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in India. (Porbandar, Gujarat).
  • The people of India called him “Bapuji” affectionately which mean father.
  • He was only 13 years old when got married to Kasturba after which she was known as Kasturba Gandhi. She was a great support system for him through the freedom fight movement.
  • Gandhi studied law in England and worked in a law office in South Africa.
  • In spite of being wealthy, Gandhi traveled by third class compartment of a train to experience the country. He wanted to know how the underprivileged travelled
  • He started something called the Satyagraha Movement which demanded that all the citizens of India should have identification in the form of finger prints or an ID card. In spite of his peaceful approach he was forced to go to jail by the British government.
  • He toured entire India just to know the country and its villages.
  • Gandhi’s principles had a great influence on other great leaders like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela who brought about reforms in their own countries.
  • Gandhi was killed by a political extremist called Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948.
