How Much Calcium Do I Need A Day ?

If you are wondering how much calcium do you need a day, you will be surprised to learn that there are several factors that affect the amount of calcium a person should consume. Besides age, other factors include gender, the medications and supplements the person is taking and the mineral density of the bone. Usually, the recommended intake of calcium is from 1,000 mg to 1,500 mg. However, it varies for children, teenagers, pregnant women and nursing women.

Here is the recommended dose of calcium for different age groups:

    • Children between the ages of 4 and 8 should take 800 mg of calcium
    • Children between the ages 9 and 18 should take 1,300 mg of the mineral
    • Adults between the ages 19 and 50 should be looking to consume 1,000 mg of calcium every day
    • Adults, who are 51 years and above, should consume 1,200 mg of calcium per day
    • Pregnant and nursing women should consume 1,200 mg of calcium every day
    • Post-menopausal women should take between 1,200 mg and 1,500 mg of calcium daily

As calcium cannot be stored in the body, it is important that the daily calcium requirement of the body is met through calcium-rich food and/or calcium supplements. Dairy products are a good source of calcium. One glass of milk (8 oz.) contains around 300 mg of calcium; while 2 slices of cheese contains as much calcium as one glass of milk. Other calcium-rich food are salmon, tofu, almonds, beans and yogurt. There are even calcium fortified foods that are available today in the form of soy milk and orange juice.

If your food does not contain calcium, then it is best to opt for calcium supplements. Remember, chewable tablets are better absorbed by the body compared to pills that have to be swallowed whole. You can opt for calcium carbonate or calcium citrate. Most people often go for calcium carbonate, as it is cheaper. Usually, if a person is taking calcium carbonate, make sure that it is consumed along with your meal to ensure absorption. If a person is suffering from constipation due to calcium supplement intake, try taking calcium citrate. Furthermore, calcium citrate can be consumed during any part of the day, with meals or its own.

If you want to know how much calcium you should be taking based on your gender, age and health, consult your doctor before you begin taking the supplement. The doctor will advise you correctly.
