IVF And Progesterone Side Effects

Progesterone is an important hormone without which pregnancy cannot occur. It is this hormone that is responsible for preparing the uterus for implantation after the egg is fertilized by the sperm. Progesterone is secreted by the ovaries as ovulation takes place.

Basically progesterone is responsible for causing the thickening of the uterus wall, also known as endometrium, so that the embryo can implant itself to the uterus. If the implantation does not take place, the progesterone levels in your body drop leading to menstruation. However, if implantation occurs, then the woman becomes pregnant. Once the placenta forms after 10 weeks of pregnancy, the ovaries stop producing progesterone as it is now produced by the placenta and this production continues until the birth of the child.

Women who are undergoing IVF have to necessary take progesterone as it is part and parcel of the infertility treatment. Usually women who are infertile also have low levels of natural progesterone which could be one of the reasons why they are unable to conceive. Those undergoing IVF have to prepare the uterus for implantation of the fertilized eggs and this means taking progesterone. Most women are immediately started on progesterone after the eggs are removed from the ovaries for fertilization in the laboratory.

Here are some progesterone side effects that women face when they are undergoing IVF:

        - The most common side effect of progesterone is tenderness of the breasts along with the feeling of being slightly bloated.

        - Women who are given progesterone injection in the form of oil experience pain and redness at the injection site.

        - More adverse effects of progesterone are seen when taken as vaginal suppositories. Here the women experience vaginal irritation or itching. However, women who take injections can experience skin rash at the injection site.
