Infertility And TSH Levels

There is research to suggest that infertility and TSH levels are interconnected. This usually happens when a woman has a thyroid disorder that is left untreated. Thyroid is an endocrine gland that is responsible for regulating the cellular function of the body and when this gets disrupted, it can affect a woman's fertility.

Usually in women it has been seen that hypothyroidism is a common cause of infertility. In hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland is underactive and the pituitary, which is responsible for release thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH, tries to increase the quantity of this hormone to help the thyroid to work normally. The pituitary gland is stimulated to release the TSH by the hypothalamus by excreting thyroid releasing hormone or TRH. However, when the TRH reaches the pituitary, besides TSH even prolactin is released in higher quantities and this as a result suppresses the production of follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone which are responsible for stimulating the ovary to ovulate. Therefore, it can be safely concluded that infertility and TSH levels are connected.

In contrast when the thyroid gland is overactive, the condition is known as hyperthyroidism. When a woman has this condition, it blocks the effect of estrogen and this leads to the uterus lining becoming thin. A thin uterine wall means that the embryo cannot be implanted after fertilization takes place; thus leading to infertility.

If you want to figure out whether your infertility is caused by a thyroid disorder, you have to undertake a simple blood test to find out the TSH levels, which will identify any problems with your thyroid. Normal TSH levels are between 0.5 and 5.5 mIU/ml, with anything below 0.5 is considered to be hyperthyroidism and anything above 5.5 is considered to be hypothyroidism.

Many doctors feel that for a woman to be fertile, her TSH levels should be around 2 mIU/ml or less. Anything above that will render a woman infertile.
