Symptoms Of Rupture With Ectopic Pregnancy

As per Dr. Peter Chen, who is affiliated to the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, in the US, 1 out every hundred pregnancies is an ectopic pregnancy. In such a pregnancy, the fertilized egg attaches itself to some other organ instead of the uterus wall. The attachment can occur in the fallopian tubes, cervix or the abdominal cavity. If such a pregnancy goes untreated, the growing fetus ruptures the organ it has attached itself to, resulting in internal bleeding. This can be life-threatening for the woman. Hence, if a woman is pregnant, she should be aware of the symptoms of rupture with an ectopic pregnancy, so that she can avail immediate medical attention.

One of the first signs of a rupture with ectopic pregnancy is pain in the abdominal and pelvic regions. While some amount of pain and cramps is normal in a healthy pregnancy, sharp and shooting pain that occurs all of a sudden is a sign of rupture with ectopic pregnancy. The pain is usually present on one side of the abdominal region and becomes worse with time. As the pain increases, it can spread to the rest of the abdomen and pelvic region.

As a ruptured ectopic pregnancy results in internal bleeding, the woman will also experience dizziness and lightheadedness due to loss of blood. Some women may also faint because of blood loss. If a woman faints or feels lightheaded, she should immediately rush to the emergency room of the nearest hospital. It could make all the difference between living and dying due to a rupture caused by an ectopic pregnancy.

A ruptured ectopic pregnancy also results in vaginal bleeding. The woman may experience light bleeding, which usually begins as though menstrual periods have set on. Gradually, the bleeding becomes heavy and the blood turns from brown to bright red. This is a medical emergency and should be treated as such.

Due to internal bleeding, some women can go into a state of shock. This can cause a sudden plunge in the blood pressure and the woman’s nails and lips could turn blue. Furthermore, shock also causes profuse sweating and shallow breathing. This is a medical emergency and the woman should be rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment.

When an ectopic pregnancy ruptures, the blood can collect in the abdominal cavity right under the diaphragm. This can result in sharp pain in the neck or shoulder region. The intensity of the pain increases with time no amount of heat packs and massage will alleviate the pain. This is another symptom of rupture in an ectopic pregnancy.
