Once you stop using your credit cards, call up your credit card companies and cancel all your credit cards.

Your next step in getting out of debt is to establish an emergency fund. Many gurus and experts might not ask you to do this because the rationale behind it is why save before paying off your debt. However, you need to have money in hand for emergencies like medical emergencies.

Your emergency fund should be liquid fund but not easily accessible otherwise you will be tempted to use it. You can think about opening a savings account at an online bank and transfer the money to your checking account when an emergency arises.

Now you have start concentrating on eliminating your debt. Start with organizing all your bills from lowest to highest. This will give you an idea where most of your money is going. You should start with paying off the higher interest debt first and then proceed to other debts.
