Menopause marks the end of the fertile period in a woman’s life. While the relatively more common symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, night sweats, temperamental changes, vaginal dryness and general aches and pains; the eruption of itchy skin rash is also observed in many women. Although this symptom may not be as serious as the others, it still disrupts one’s normal life.

The fundamental reason behind the occurrence of all these symptoms is hormonal fluctuation within the body. The phase of menopause highlights the cessation of egg production by the ovaries and reduction in the synthesis of the sexual hormones, estrogen and progesterone. These hormonal changes trigger the eruption of itchy skin, also referred to as paresthesia. This is accompanied by feeling of numbness and tingling sensation on the skin, which in turn causes immense discomfort.

At this point, one might wonder that if these hormones are related with sexuality, then why is the repercussion of their decrease felt on the skin. Well, there is a strong correlation between the two. Apart from playing a significant role in female reproduction, estrogen has many other vital functions within the body, maintenance of skin and hair being one of them. The hormone, estrogen is believed to trigger the production of collagen and oils that aid in smoothing of the skin. A decline in the estrogen levels due to menopause results in reduction of oil production in the female’s body. This also adversely affects the potential of the skin to preserve moisture. As a consequence of these aspects, the skin appears dry leading to itchiness and eruption of rashes. These symptoms of itchiness and frequent development of rashes could also be associated with the medical condition of eczema that several women may be prone to during menopause, owing to reduction in the body immunity.

Believe it or not, a diet high in fats can certainly help you overcome these symptoms of menopause. Foods like salmon, walnuts, eggs or algae oils that contain omega-3 assist in making the skin supple and well hydrated. Consumption of foods devoid of these vital fatty acids makes the individual more prone to itchy skin and rash. The skin becomes even drier when subjected to the sun. Therefore, it is advisable to apply sunscreen with an SPF value of more than 15 to prevent further skin damage on sun exposure. Avoid having bath with hot water. Although it may seem refreshing and relaxing, it only aggravates the dryness of skin and depletes the natural oil content in the body further. So, opt for lukewarm water or reduce the duration of your hot showers.
