If your employer did not pay unemployment insurance, then you will not be eligible to receive the benefits. Also, those who are self employed or are working as independent contractors cannot apply for these benefits.
There is a minimum wage requirement for a specific period of time in order to apply for the benefits. If you do not meet this requirement, the benefits are denied. This criterion varies from state to state, so it is best to check out what the minimum requirement is for your state.
There are documents that need to be provided to the unemployment benefits' office. Usually, the most important document is the proof of earnings. This should be in the form of a letter by the last employer or a W-2 form. If you cannot furnish this documentation, you will be denied the compensation.
If you have resigned from your position on your own without being told by the employer, it is also a reason for denial. The same is also true if you were fired for misconduct at work. If you are not working because of a labor dispute with your employers, the claim is denied.
If you were unemployed and were getting the benefits and have got the benefit for the maximum period allowed by your state for the calendar year, then you cannot get anymore benefits. Usually this time period varies from one state to the next and is generally for 26 weeks.
