In Mexico, the pesticide industry is booming. Unfortunately the control on the use of these pesticides is not very stringent. In fact, many pesticides that are banned in the US are being used in Mexico without any qualms. Pesticides like DDT, aldrin, chlordane and clorobenzolate are being used rampantly in Mexico.
According to statistics of pesticides in Mexico, even pesticides that are deemed to be relatively safe are not being used as the usage label. Primarily this is because the farmers are either illiterate or semi-literate and do not care about the dangers involved. These farmers do not seem to realize that if too large a dose of pesticide is applied to the wrong crop, it can have devastating results.
Many multinational companies like Bayer, Ciba-Geigy, Dow Chemical, ICI, Dupont, Shell and Union Carbide are operating in Mexico. In fact, according to Mexican government statistics which are available only for 1984, these multinationals hold 43 percent of the market share.
Most of the chemicals that are used for making pesticides in Mexico are produced locally by the state-owned company Fertimex, and it is believed that most of the active ingredients, which are dangerous chemicals, are produced by Fertimex.
According to statistics, the pesticide industry will grow still further as Mexico has to produce more food to feed its growing population. As per experts from the Mexican Association of Studies for the Defense of the Consumer, any pesticide can be marketed in the country without regard to health of farmers and impact on the environment.
