Fruits can be of different types, namely schizocarp, silique, drupe and pome. Apple is a pome fruit and belongs to the family of Rosaceae.
Pome is the French name for apple. While a drupe fruit is a stone like fruit, a pome fruit is a fleshy fruit like the apple. Some examples of drupe fruits are peach and olive.Coming back to apples, this is the most widely cultivated fruit tree. An apple tree is small, and reaches up to a height of 3 to 12 meters. The flowers of this tree are white with slight tinges of pink. You can see the fruits maturing in autumn, and each fruit may measure around 5 to 9 centimeters. A mature tree may produce around 40 to 200 kilos of apples. Apple trees are generally affected by pests and diseases such as aphids, mildew and apple scab.
There are more than 7,500 varieties of apples. They are different for different temperature and climates. There are various varieties of apples that can be eaten fresh, but there are other varieties which can be added to beverages. While people of North America and England prefer sweet and sub-acid apples, people of Asia have a preference for extremely sweet apples, without any acidic flavor.
Apples are produced in a very large scale all over the world. China leads the apple production in the world, with US following it at a second place. The other countries which also produce apples are Turkey, Iran, France, New Zealand, Australia, Chile and Italy.
