Banana Producing Countries

Among the fruits, bananas are considered to the most widely used by humans. Banana is a very nutritive fruit, which is rich in vitamins and fiber.

This fruit is produced mainly in the tropical climates. The fruit is available all year round. It is no surprise then that India leads banana production in the world. Its annual banana production is around 21.77 million metric tons. In fact, it produces around one quarter of the total banana crop produced worldwide. The other nations that produce bananas are China, Brazil, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Thailand, Columbia and Burundi. China is considered to be the second largest producer of bananas in the world.

Though there are so many countries that produce bananas, countries like India and Brazil use most of the bananas produced domestically. Hence, they do not deal much in international trade of bananas. The countries that form a major share in banana exports are countries such as Ecuador, Columbia, Costa Rica and the Philippines. Almost three quarters of total banana exports come from these countries, and it is believed around one third of banana exports worldwide comes from Ecuador. But it may be noted that only one fifth of the total bananas produced are traded in the international market.

Europe, the United States and Japan together import around 70 percent of the world total imports of bananas. So, while banana is hugely popular in the countries that it is produced in, the countries where bananas are not produced also enjoy this fruit equally, and the total banana import of the world is a testimony to this fact.
