Most widely referred to as a fruit, the banana is actually a herb. Although this may sound strange, it is a fact. An herb in botanical term means a plant without woody stems.
The banana plants are not trees, but herbaceous perennials that can grow up to a height of 10 to 25 feet. What seems like the trunk of the banana tree is actually not a trunk. Many leaves are wrapped together around the stem which makes it look like a trunk.Not only the banana fruit, but each and every part of the banana tree is used by people. While the leaves of the trees are used for steaming food, the flowers of the tree are cooked and eaten, and in some parts of the world, the stem is also cooked and eaten.
It is a well known fact that bananas are rich in potassium, fiber and carbohydrates. But the pulp and peel of this fruit are also equally beneficial. They have antimicrobial properties, and it is also believed that the inside of the banana peel can be a good treatment for mild sunburns. The sugar in the bananas is easily digestible, and it is a source of instant energy.
Raw bananas, or plantains, are cooked like vegetables and eaten. They are even fried or boiled in some cases. Irrespective of whether it is eaten in the form of a vegetable or a fruit, this herb is immensely beneficial for our health. In fact, it is believed that banana is one of the few fruits which do not get contaminated by the residue of pesticides.
