While we all know that bananas are very good for health, and though they are widely used all over the world, many of us may not be aware of its place and time of origin.
There are different theories related to the origin of the banana.Some believe that bananas were first cultivated in Malaysia, whereas recent studies reveal that cultivation of bananas may have first begun in the New Guinean highlands. There are many wild species of bananas that are still found in the jungles of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
It was Alexander the Great who introduced the bananas to the Europeans in 327 B C. They were brought to Africa in 500 AD from India. The western countries got the taste of this fruit in the latter half of the 19th century. Since the fruit could not be transported far and wide, only people at the sea coast could enjoy it. However, after the invention of various transportation facilities in the 20th century, the banana is now widely available.
Today, bananas are grown in more than 100 countries. They are grown mostly in tropical countries. The major commercial producers of bananas are Costa Rica, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, China and India, while the United States has the least banana production.
There are several varieties of bananas that are available. While the most common bananas are the ones with yellow or green skins, there are other varieties that have red and pink skin. Whatever may be the variant, the banana is a highly nutritive fruit, with many health benefits. The origin of banana has proven to be a boon to mankind.
