Grapefruit seed extract has several potential antioxidants and antimicrobial properties. Grapefruit is a citrus fruit, and the extract is derived from the membranes, seeds and pulp of the fruit. There are many health threatening microbes in the environment and grapefruit seed extract has the ability to fight against them. However, grapefruit seed extract or GSE does not suit everyone and can interfere with certain medications. Consult your doctor before you start taking the extract.
A group of researchers from Germany and Poland tested if GSE had any gastro protective properties. They conducted an animal test using rats and applied GSE to gastric mucosal lesions. This research proved that GSE has gastro protective qualities.
GSE has several antimicrobial properties which help in maintaining oral health. Excessive Vitamin C found in GSE helps to fight various infections. J.Puotinen, who wrote the book called Nature’s Antiseptics, suggests that you can add a few drops of grapefruit seed extract to the regular mouthwash you use. You can also make a mouthwash at home by mixing GSE with cinnamon oil, cloves, ginger and nutmeg. Dilute the liquid and use it as a mouthwash for maintaining oral health.
Grapefruit seed extract can also cure skin disorders when applied topically. Even though it is very effective for internal applications, the extract is also equally good as an ointment. GSE is helpful in treating several disorders like acne, sore foot, wounds and cuts, warts, rashes and allergy symptoms. If you have athlete’s foot, soak your feet in warm water that is diluted with a few drops of GSE. It will relieve the symptoms. GSE is also effective in removing corns. GSE can fight all kinds of bacteria and viruses. That is why it is considered as most efficient in treatments of skin disorders. For problems such as acne, one can drink grape seed juice or also apply it topically.
GSE also acts as a very efficient disinfectant. Any area which is causing symptoms like pus due to bacterial or viral infection can be cured by grape seed extract. It fights bacteria, viruses and fungi and several other micro pathogens. You can mix forty drips of the extract with 1 quart of water. This solution can be used as a disinfectant. The same solution can be used as a hand wash, mouthwash, sterilizer for surgical instruments and so many other things. It is also healthy way to disinfect rather than using chemicals. The same extract can also be used to wash clothes along with detergent.
