Lemon balm is mainly used for its medicinal effects and several herbalists use it for medicinal preparations. Some people also have lemon balm tea made out of lemon balm leaves. The leaves, flowers and the stems of the plant are used in medicinal preparations. Lemon balm has several good effects and it is used to cure minor child ailments. It is effective for cough and cold and the ointment made out of lemon balm also helps to cure minor cuts and scrapes. It has a soothing effect. Lemon balm is also used to reduce the symptoms of respiratory problems and indigestion problems as well. It can also cure nervous disorder symptoms like insomnia, stress and anxiety. It has a soothing and calming effect on the nerves and can be very helpful for headaches.

However, lemon balm does have some side effects also. Lemon balm when used with some other drugs can cause problems for you. It can cause unnecessary drowsiness and it is not advised to be taken during the day. If people with hypothyroidism are taking lemon balm for cure, then they should consult the doctor first as it may interfere with the treatment. People with glaucoma should also be careful with the usage of lemon balm as it may interfere with the sugar levels. It increases the pressure inside the eyes and also causes excessive sleepiness.
