Tips On Growing Asparagus In My Garden

The scientific name for asparagus is Asparagus officinalis. It is a perennial spring vegetable. Asparagus is one of those rare vegetables that is considered to be extremely nutritious. At the same time, it is low in calories, cholesterol, sodium and fat, making it ideal for those suffering from cardiovascular diseases.

Asparagus contains vitamins A, C, E and K. Other important nutrients are copper, dietary fiber, folic acid, iron, magnesium, manganese, niacin, phosphorus, protein, riboflavin, selenium, thiamin and zinc. Asparagus is also known to be an essential ingredient for many delicious recipes.

Since it is a perennial plant, choose an area in the garden where you can grow them for at least 20 to 30 years. Asparagus is also an extremely hardy plant and can be planted the moment soil has been prepared. The best time to plant asparagus is from April to May.

Before planting them, you need to prepare the soil well. Make trenches that are approximately one foot deep. Inside the trench put a layer of six inches of phosphorus rich fertilizer. You can also put compost at the very bottom of the trench. While planting the asparagus crowns, space them about one foot on top of the fertilizer or compost in the trench. After planting the crowns, fill the remaining trench with loose soil. These transplanted plants should be watered slightly just after planting them. Asparagus thrives quite well in dry weather. Therefore, you need not over water them unnecessarily. This may spoil the roots and damage the plant. It is very important to keep these plants saved from insect infestation and beetle spoils. To achieve a high yield of asparagus, use good quality insecticide.
