Thyme is a shrub grown the world over for its medicinal and culinary properties. Dried thyme flowers, leaves and buds are extensively used in numerous cuisines for seasoning purposes. They add a unique flavor to each recipe and are savored by many.
Thyme oil has been used for cooking numerous recipes for centuries now. It is easy to prepare, does not cost much and at the same time gives out a natural fresh aroma to the meal, making it smell and taste yummy.
If you want to prepare thyme oil, collect a large quantity of thyme plants. You have to dry them initially before using them for further treatment. Wash the plants to remove superficial dirt. Spread them in a well-ventilated area. Allow them to dry naturally. Moisture has to be removed completely to prevent the growth of microorganisms.
After the plants have dried thoroughly, grind them in a mortar and pestle very gently. This process will release numerous natural oils imparting a stronger smell to the oil. Next, mix this ground thyme along with olive oil in a pan. You can also use grape seed oil or safflower oil for this purpose, Place it on the stove but remember to simmer the flame over medium heat. Allow it to boil steadily until you notice the formation of bubbles. Now, you can remove the saucepan from the stove. Allow the oil to cool on its own. Once it has cooled, you can pour it into an airtight container and put it into the refrigerator at once.
