Cauliflower has a white, compact head known as curd, and this head has firmly attached mild green leaves. The vegetable has high content of vitamin C. In fact, if you consume one and half cup of cauliflower, you can get the entire daily requirement of the vitamin. The vegetable is also a good source of fiber, folate and potassium. It is also low in calories.
To prepare steamed cauliflower, remove the leaves and stem as well, and trim away any brown or dark areas on the head. Now cut the large head into florets. You can further cut large-sized floret while keeping the small florets as they are. Even the inner core of the vegetable can be eaten. So, make sure you use it.
Always remember that steaming is a better option of cooking a vegetable than boiling. Steaming helps to preserve the nutrients in the vegetables.
To steam cauliflower, place it in a steamer basket, and then again place it in a pot with 2.5 inches of water. Cover and steam. Florets would take 3 to 5 minutes to cook. A whole head of cauliflower weight around 1 1/2 pounds will get steamed in around 15 to 20 minutes. However, check on the vegetable after 12 minutes. This will give you an indication as to when it will be ready
You can even steam cauliflower in a microwave oven. All you need to do is take around 2 cups of the cauliflower florets and place them in a dish that can be used in your microwave. Now add around 1/4 cup of water. Cover the dish and cook for around 3 minutes on high. After that, remove the dish and let it stand for further 2 minutes. And, then you have your steamed cauliflower.
