Gourd is a vegetable that belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. It belongs to the same family as the pumpkin. Though it is a vegetable, it can be used for a variety of purposes, such as making musical instruments, bowls, bottles, baskets, sculpturing and pyrography. It is a versatile vegetable as it can be used in so many different ways.

Another edible gourd is Serpente Di Sicila. This type is long, slender, and bright green in color. It can be cooked in a variety of ways such as baked, stuffed, steamed, or sautéed. Yet another type of gourd is the Thai bottle gourd. As the name suggests, these are bottle shaped gourds, and they are best served curried or boiled. They are really best for soups. They taste very good and they can be used to make some of the most interesting dishes.

Gourds taste best when they are tender. As they mature, they tend to be sour and so they are best picked when they are just ripe. An important benefit in eating bitter gourd is that it helps to control diabetes. There are many recipes for gourds and you can try them out according to your liking.
