Onions have numerous health benefits apart from their culinary uses. They can be used in salads, soups and as an ingredient for different dishes. Long time ago, onions were used to treat cold, cough and asthma. The World Health Organization (WHO) believes that onions can be used for treating poor appetite and preventing atherosclerosis.

Onion extracts are known to provide relief to bronchial spasms. They are a rich in fructo-oligosaccharides. These are effective in suppressing the growth of dormant but harmful bacteria that live in the colon. The bulb also contains sulfides, which to lower blood pressure. Onions have flavonoids, which are substances that are known to provide protection against variety of cardiovascular disease. They have anti-clotting properties too.

Onions with stronger and more pungent flavor are better than the milder varieties. They are known to protect the stomach against cancer. It is also believed that onions are able to enhance lung function. In many parts of the world, it is believed that onions have the property to heal blisters and boils. Some people use onions for curing wounds from sea urchins. They tie a half baked onion to the affected area and leave it overnight. Onions are especially good for women who have a tendency to develop osteoporosis. Some people also believe that onion juice can promote hair growth.

In spite of the various health benefits of onions, it makes sense to consume them in moderate quantities. Too much intake can lead to gastrointestinal irritation. You must also make sure that you wash them thoroughly before consumption.
