Dengue is a viral infection which is caused b y the mosquitoes which cause high fever, muscle and joint pain, headaches, rash, vomiting and nausea. This infection is mild in majority, but some may experience dengue hemorrhagic fever which sometimes causes death.
After the mosquito bites a person, the period of incubation is between 3 and 15 days, and then the symptoms and signs come up. Dengue begins with a headache, chills, low backache and pain when eyes are moved. The joints and the legs begin to pain within few hours after the illness starts. The body temperature goes up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and patient will have low heart rate and low blood pressure. Redness in the eyes is common. The neck glands and the groin glands swell as well.
The symptoms and fever will be for 2 to 4 days. After that the temperature drops and body begins to sweat. And, this is followed by normal temperature that stays for a day. And then the temperature rises again. A rash will appear on whole body leaving the face. The soles and the palms swell and become red.
A virus causes dengue. It has no particular medicine or any antibiotic as a cure. Just the symptoms can be treated. Lots of fluid intake and rest is needed to cure dengue. Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and aspirin should not be taken. For headache and muscle and joint pain, codeine and acetaminophen can be used.
Because precaution is better than cure, it is best to take precautions to ensure that you do not come down with dengue fever. Do not keep the water stagnant for more than 2 days, use mosquito repellents at nights and keep handy rackets with you to kill any mosquitoes flying around your vicinity. Also, if you are in a mosquito infested area, keep doors and windows covered with screens, and use mosquito repellant.
