| How To Bring Down A Fever ?
When the body temperature rises above normal, it is known as a fever. Usually, a fever will develop as a symptom when a person has some other infection or illness. The fever occurs due to the response of the body's immune system while fighting and destroying the pathogen causing the infection or illness. At the same time, if a fever is too high, it can be dangerous for a person. Besides having body ache, fatigue, chills and general malaise, high fever can cause a lot of damage to the body. Hence, it is beneficial to know how to bring down a fever when it is particularly high.
Here are some tips on how to bring down a fever:
The person should stay well hydrated when suffering from fever. Many people do not know that fevers can result in dehydration quite easily and this could lead to serious complications. Hence, the person should be given lots of fluids to consume right through the day. While water is good to keep the person hydrated, you can even give a person sports drinks or vitamin water to ensure that the lost electrolytes are replenished in the body.
Taking a cool bath helps to bring down high fever. In this case, the water should not be ice cold as it can cause hypothermia, which can be life threatening. Hypothermia is a condition where the body temperature falls below the normal temperature. Instead, the water should be cool or room temperature and the person should sit in the water for around fifteen to twenty minutes. Then the person should be rubbed dry and made to put on clothes. This is an effective method of bringing down high fever until the medication begins to work.
Using a cold compress or ice pack can also help in bringing down the fever. The cold compress should be placed at the back of the neck and changed whenever it gets warm. In addition, the compress can be run along the body, especially on the back, forehead, stomach and head.
There are over-the-counter fever medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen that help in bringing down fever. To start with the person should be given around 200 mg of the medication and it should be given every four to six hours right through the day. The medication will take around thirty minutes to begin working. Some doctors recommend alternating between ibuprofen and acetaminophen as there is scientific evidence to show that this alternation is more effective in reducing the fever than using just one of the medications.
