Simple steps to increase your life expectancy

If you want to increase your life expectancy, you will have to work. No, it does not mean hard labor. Just taking a few simple steps will help increase not just your life expectancy but also overall health. So, here it goes…

Sunlight
You can increase your life expectancy just by spending some time outdoors in bright sunshine. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it cells begin producing Vitamin D. This vitamin is important for bone health and also prevents depression, heart disease and many other health problems. Vitamin D also helps in regulating the amount of melatonin in the body and this hormone is responsible for controlling the sleep patterns. So, if your melatonin levels are right, you will also sleep well in the nights and wake feeling refreshed and rested in the mornings.

According to researchers, nearly 50 percent of the adult population suffers from Vitamin D deficiency, as they do not believe in spending time out in the sun. This is probably because we have been tuned to believing that sun exposure can result in skin cancer. However, just spending 20 to 25 minutes a day in sunshine can help you increase your life expectancy and improve your health without spending a dime.

Typically, elderly people are prone to Vitamin D deficiency and those who spend all their time indoors. Such people can easily get a simple blood test done to find out whether they are suffering from deficiency. If they are, they should spend more time in the sun. If they cannot spend time in the sun, they should immediately begin taking Vitamin D supplements.

Exercise
Exercise is another way to increase life expectancy. If you are not a lover of exercise, perhaps this finding will change your mind. A study found that people who exercised vigorously for about 3 hours every week had DNA and cells that were 9 years younger compared to people who did not exercise.

You can achieve similar results by exercising just for 30 minutes every day. Immediately you will notice that not only do you feel more energized, you also feel better about your body and health.

Simple exercises like swimming, yoga, stretching exercises, free weights, jogging, brisk walking or cycling should be more than enough to start with. As you get more into the exercise routine, you can start out with more vigorous exercises, such as aerobics or cardio workout. However, make sure that you first speak to your doctor, especially if you have some health-related problems.

Socializing
As ironic as it may sound but if you want to increase your life expectancy, spend more time with your friends and people you love. The more positive relationships you have with people around you, the better you will feel. This, in turn, will improve your health and also increase your life expectancy.

The logic behind this is very simple. People who have friends and family that they care about are less likely to indulge in risk behaviors and lifestyle. They are more likely to take good care of themselves.

Flossing
Even as a child, you were always told to floss your teeth to prevent cavities and maintain good oral hygiene. It now turns out that flossing every day can actually improve a person’s life expectancy. Why is this? The reason is that flossing prevent development of gum diseases and it also prevent people from getting heart problems.

Basically when a person does not floss, it leads to proliferation of harmful bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria cause gum problems and they also find their way into blood vessels where they end up causing plaque. The body’s immune system reacts to the bacteria and this causes inflammation in the blood vessels, causing the arteries to narrow and dilate. So the heart has to work harder to pump blood and when it continuously has to work hard, it results in heart disease.
