Causes Of High Vitamin B12 In Blood Levels

Though high Vitamin B12 in blood levels is a rare occurrence, it does occur. This happens when there is problem with the working of the liver, or there is blood disease. Vitamin B12 is a very important vitamin for the body. It aids the nerve cells, the RBCs and is even used to produce DNA in the cells. If there is high level of Vitamin B12 in the blood, it occurs due to cirrhosis of the liver, hepatitis, polycythemia vera or myelocytic leukemia. Taking supplements of the vitamin will not result in elevated Vitamin B12 levels in the blood.

High Vitamin B12 levels in the blood can occur due to cirrhosis, or formation of scar tissue on the liver. As the working of the liver is affected due to cirrhosis, it cannot metabolize the entire vitamin. Hence, excess vitamin is released in the blood. Even scientific studies have found an association between high levels of Vitamin B12 and cirrhosis of the liver. The studies indicate that the levels of the vitamin increase in the blood when it is released during hepatic cytolysis or when the liver is unable to clear the vitamin from the body.

In case of hepatitis, the increase in the vitamin occurs as it is primarily stored in the liver. When the liver function decreases, this stored vitamin is released into the blood. While hepatitis may get alright without treatment, it is a risk not worth taking, as untreated hepatitis can result in liver failure, liver cancer or cirrhosis of the liver.

Chronic myelocytic leukemia can also result in high levels of Vitamin B12. This is bone marrow cancer in which the serum proteins tend bind more with the vitamin compared to the liver proteins. The high levels of the vitamin can also occur due to deficiency of B12 transferase.

In Polycythemia vera, the body produces more red blood cells. In one study conducted in the Netherlands, it was found that patients suffering from this disease had high levels of the vitamin in their blood. People suffering from polycythemia vera lack the ability to bind the vitamin properly and hence, the levels of the vitamin are high in the blood. In fact, in order to diagnose the disease, the level of the vitamin in the blood is tested. Polycythemia vera leads to myelofibrosis, a disease where the number of WBCs, RBCs and platelets decrease. If a person suffering from myelofibrosis is tested, the blood will always show high levels of Vitamin B12.
