It is caused due to muscle strain or a degenerative muscle disease. Herniated disk causes a pain that runs down the leg and occurs mostly in people aged between twenty and sixty. Spinal stenosis affects the seniors mostly and causes pain in the thighs and buttocks.

Axial back pain can be easily treated non surgically. In case of herniated and spinal stenosis, if the non operative methods do not work within a span of three months, a surgery is suggested.

Here are some of the non surgical options to treat a back pain:

Doctors prescribe over the counter anti-inflammatory medications. Several like Advil or Aleve work very well. The medications are prescribed for a period of 10 days and after that if the pain does not subside, one should see a doctor. Even though the root cause of back pain is not an inflammation, these drugs work pretty well.

Physical therapy is also an effective way to treat the condition. People with back pain are taught several exercises that help in strengthening the back muscles. It increases the blood supply and reduces pain in local areas. Yoga and pilates are very effective for back pain. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke suggests that exercise is the most effective way for recovering from a back pain completely. Physical therapy helps to ease the disk by reducing the pressure on the back and also strengthening back muscles. There are many types of pain-relieving injections that help in treating back pain. Most of them are steroids.

Another non surgical treatment for back pain is getting steroidal injections at the site of the pain. These injections are mixed with numbing drugs and help to numb the afflicted site and thereby reduce pain. However, this is usually a temporary treatment and cannot be used for a long period of time.
