Well, there are certain types of persistent coughs that unfortunately do not go easily with simple home remedies or cough suppressants. To get a full-fledged treatment from such irritating persistent cough you take an appointment with a doctor and get yourself investigated thoroughly. Seeing all your investigation reports, the doctor will put you on a treatment plan. There are some types of coughs that usually last for long.
GERD, or gastro-esophageal reflux, affects almost fifteen percent of the population in totality. This condition arises when the fluttering flap between the esophagus and the stomach is weak. Due to this, the acid produced in the stomach gets pushed back into the throat causing throat irritation and coughing. This type of cough occurs usually at nights after a heavy meal and comes along with complaints of heart burn.
Post nasal congestion can be another reason for persistent coughs. Post nasal congestions are triggered due to allergies, virus infections, dry air and pollution in the air.
Asthma also causes chronic and persistent cough. This type of cough is accompanied with wheezing and shortness of breath. Medicines that are usually prescribed by doctors for treating high blood pressure and other heart conditions, like ACE inhibitors and Beta blockers, can also cause dry persistent coughs.
