There are several health problems that can result in vomit and diarrhea. At times, vomit and diarrhea can also occur due to some simple underlying health issues. When it comes to the elderly, vomit and diarrhea should not be ignored as the person can easily get dehydrated, which could cause further complications.

As strange as it may sound, even the elderly are prone to appendicitis. When the appendix gets inflamed, it leads to appendicitis. This inflammation can occur due to the presence of a foreign object or even feces causing a blockage. It has been seen that in some of the elderly, tumors can result in appendicitis. The first symptom to manifest itself will be pain in the abdomen followed by vomit, diarrhea, fever, chills, appetite loss and nausea. In order to rule out appendicitis in the elderly, a doctor will do number of tests. If the diagnosis is confirmed, the person would have to undergo a surgical removal of the appendix.
The elderly have a weak immune system due to the natural aging process. Hence, they are prone to getting gastroenteritis, also referred to as stomach flu. In this condition, the stomach and intestines get inflamed. The symptoms of gastroenteritis include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and pain in the abdomen. Usually the disease is foodborne and can be due to bacteria or viruses. In case the condition of the elderly is not serious, not medication will be required. However, the person would have to be kept well hydrated. However, if the condition of the senior is worrying, then hospitalization may be required.
Another cause for vomit and diarrhea in the elderly is a condition known as diverticulitus. In this condition, there is inflammation of the walls of the intestine. Diverticulitus is common among the elderly and is hardly found in people who are less than forty years. The most common symptoms of diverticulitis include vomiting, diarrhea, pain in the abdomen, nausea, fever, chills and loss of weight. According to some healthcare specialists, this condition results from elevated blood pressure or unusual pressure in the colon. This condition can be treated with the help of antibiotics. However, if the diverticulitus is particularly severe, then surgery may be required.
