Effect Of Perjury On Court Case

Perjury is an offense which has a significant influence on a court case. Perjury is the act of lying under oath during a judicial proceeding.

Also, someone can be accused and convicted of perjury, only if the lie affects the outcome of the proceeding. Hence, perjury always does affect the outcome of the court case, or it wouldn’t be termed as perjury in the first place. Here are some of the effects of perjury on court case.

Perjury leads to miscarriage of justice and also usurps the power of the court, and hence is treated as a very serious offense. The most common use of perjury is when the defendant willingly perjures himself to exonerate himself of the crime for which he is being tried. This, of course, will obviously lead to the obstruction of justice, as the defendant will not be punished for a crime he has committed due to the lie under oath. Similarly, a witness can willingly change facts under oath and lie to defend the defendant in a court case and thereby affect the outcome of the judicial proceeding. Anyone who has read A Prison of Birth (authored by Jeffrey Archer) will know the seriousness of perjury.

Falsifying evidence can also lead to the indicting and prosecution of an innocent man for a crime he has not committed in order to save oneself or someone else. Since all these types of perjury always affect the outcomes of judicial proceedings, it is treated as a very serious crime in order to avoid perjury in the future, and thereby reduce the effect of perjury on court cases.
