What Is The Difference Between Prozac And Celexa ?
Prozac is a Fluoxetine while Celexa is a Citalopram hydrobromide. Both drugs are used to treat depression, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorders and the like. Both drugs are SSRI and affect the serotonin neurotransmitters. Both do similar work though Prozac is a stronger drug than Celexa.
The principal dissimilarities are in the way the body deals with the drug (pharmacokinetics). Celexa exits the body in six to eight days while Prozac takes about two weeks to completely get purged. Prozac also has higher drug interactions which may interfere with the user’s health if taken with other medications simultaneously.
Some common side effects of Celexa are as follows: nausea, increased sweating, vomiting, tremors, headaches and insomnia. One out of every six people experiences at least one side effect. Upon discontinuation, patients have been known to experience withdrawal symptoms such as tingles, lethargy, dizziness, low emotional levels and irritability.
Some side effects of Prozac are as follows: anxiety, sleeplessness, restlessness, asthenia, headaches, flu and fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, gas, dyspepsia, dry mouth, excessive yawning, somnolence, skewed vision, excessive sweating, shaking, fatigue, loss of weight, allergies, rashes, delayed ejaculation, decrease in libido and weight gain in some cases. When Celexa first came into the market, it seemed to be preferred as sexual dysfunction was not a prominent side effect. But as time went by, it became clear that Celexa was not too different than Prozac. Overdose of Prozac or mixing it with other antidepressants leads to serotonin syndrome.
The distinction between fluoxetine and Citalopram is mostly academic. Celexa is a milder drug with a superior profile on side effects whereas Prozac is a stronger, larger hitting medicine. The two are not related chemically thus work slightly differently on different parts of the brain. At the end of the day, effects of the drug vary from person to person. Some antidepressants work well for certain people and not others. One should thus always consult their doctors for the best treatment.
