What Is The Definition Of Child Abuse ?  

In general vocabulary, the term ‘child abuse’ can be defined as the physical, psychological or emotional mistreatment of children. The actual definition of this term varies in relation to the jurisdiction concerned.

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, the definition of child abuse is any act or a chain of acts that is perpetrated by the parent or the caregiver of the child and results in harm to the child or poses as a threat to the child.

Another variant of the definition illustrated by the Journal of Child Abuse and Neglect states that child abuse is an act perpetrated by a caregiver or a parent and one that results in physical harm, emotional harm or exploits the child either physically or sexually.

Astonishingly, most acts of child abuse occur is the safest domain known to children, that is their homes. The four sub-heads of child abuse are physical, sexual, emotional and neglect.

The records of the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse for the year 1997 reveal that 54 percent cases of child abuse were due to neglect, 22 percent owing to physical abuse, sexual abuse claimed 8 percent, emotional maltreatment 4 percent, while 12 percent were assigned to other forms of misconduct.

A research conducted by UNICEF illustrates that when it comes to the welfare of children, the US and the UK fair very low in the list of industrial nations. It has also been brought out that children nurtured by single parents are more susceptible to child abuse in comparison to the families with both parents.
